The Maine Rd alley entrance between Haydn & Ruskin Avenue had always been a state, with bags piled up, ripped open by people looking for things to sell, bins never taken in, forever overflowing, etc. The constant buzzing of flies and the stench made it a no-go area. So a few of us set about working out who was fly tipping and why. Firstly it turned out a local business had no waste disposal license so was filling up resident’s bins. Then it turned out that several houses backing on to that alley had no bins. Then it turned out even when people did have bins, many didn’t have a clue when bin day was. To make matters worse, 14 unnumbered recycling bins seemingly owned by no-one had been abandoned their over the years, and since they were all full of the “wrong stuff”, were never going to get emptied. People would see the mess and just add to it, assuming that it was “the norm” round here.
